Geothermal – How does it work?

Geothermal, also referred to as Ground Source Heating & Cooling, is using the Earth to heat and cool a home . Geothermal works because the ground beneath us is warmer than the outside air in the winter and cooler in the summer. Inserting a series of pipes into the ground allows heat to be transferred to and from the home. It is not created, it is transported – no fuel is burned.

Geothermal consist of two pieces:

  1. Heat Pump – the inside unit.
  2. Ground Loop – underground piping that connects to the Heat Pump.

In the Winter, the underground pipes circulate water which absorbs the heat from the earth and returns it to the Heat Pump. The Heat Pump takes the heat from the liquid, then distributes it throughout your home as warm air. With the heat removed, the water is recirculated to collect more heat from the Earth.

In the Summer, the Heat Pump takes the hot air from you home and removes the heat. This leaves cool air to be distributed throughout the house as air conditioning. The removed heat is and distributed back into the Ground Loop.

There are many benefits of converting to Geothermal!
